Delta Chi Mourns the Loss of Christopher Slutman

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The staff at Delta Chi were shocked and heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our brothers, Christopher Slutman, New Haven ’98, on Monday, April 8, 2019.  Brother Slutman, a 15-year veteran of the New York Fire Department (FDNY), was serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan.  He and three others were killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb.

“On behalf of the Delta Chi International Fraternity I want to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and brothers of Christoper,” Jerod Breit, Executive Director & CEO, said.  “I am deeply saddened the world lost a dedicated public servant and heroic soldier who devoted his life to upholding the values of Delta Chi, the FDNY and the United States Marine Corps.  Brother Christopher Slutman, may you rest in peace.”

Slutman, a father of three and loving husband, was a decorated firefighter and was described as a real family man.  He received the Fire Cheifs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 for rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning building.  Slutman crawled on the floor to a room where the woman was unconscious, as he and another firefighter dragged the woman past the fire and safely turned her over to awaiting medics.
