Frank Lewis (USC '59) Publishes 4th Book

Rumpah is a stand alone novel about small mining in Eastern Nevada during the 1990's. As I spent 50 years as a prospector it has an authentic background, wrapped around a large mining company trying to steal a prospectors mining claims. Sex, murder, and the law. The book tells you exactly how to make a million dollars, if you have the guts, a little luck, and work like hell.

Frontier Justice - 1835. Is the first of a series of historical novels that begins in Independence Missouri with our hero, a 15 year old boy who's father was murdered by a neighbor, Dutch Fields, and his son to get their homestead.. Taking personal retribution the boy left the area one jump ahead of the law to avoid arrest running up the Santa Fe Trail to Santa Fe that was then a part of Mexico. Alone he worked his way through the Indian country and along the way picked up a sole survivor of a wagon train, a young woman in her 20's, Polly..

The second book of the sequels is Maria 1835 - 1836. The teen aged daughter of a large Mexican Rancho owner she was affianced to a much older uncle who's youngest child was older than her. But Maria rebelled and was sent to a Nun's school near Mexico city to straighten her out where she learned things that were not intended for any young lady to learn.

The Three Sisters, 1836. 3 young daughters of a Grandee in Spain who were caught by their father in compromising circumstances and were sent to New Mexico to be married to three distant cousins to get rid of them. A ship wreck, the only three survivors picked up by an English trader end up in the tiny village of Los Angeles.

All titles are available on Amazon.com Lewis spent time in the Army and worked prior to graduating from USC.

Over 20 Delta Chi Alumni from the Long Beach Chapter (spanning 3 decades of graduating classes) raised funds for, donated to, or participated in the 5K Walk for Independence hosted by the Blind Children's Learning Center in Orange County on June 7, 2008

Jeff White (Long Beach 1995) and Wayne Evans (Long Beach 1993) organized the fund raising campaign which raised more than $4,000. This year's effort expanded upon the success of last year's total by a factor of 4. A truly remarkable accomplishment considering the current economic climate.

The Long Beach Alumni participated in honor of Wayne's son, Dylan. Dylan was born 4 months early and due to his extraordinary course, has lost much of his sight to a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity. Dylan is a student in the Center's Pre-School Program.

(There is a picture of Wayne and Dylan crossing the finish line back in 2007 in the "more photos" link)

DELTA CHI
by Erik Braum

Many years ago
I pledged Delta Chi
I'm very glad I did
Here are some reasons why

When I became a member
At my University
I made many friends
That meant a lot to me

Fellow members - always there
Supporting all my "dreams"
Helping with hard subjects
Someone for each it seems

Then there was the frat house
A place for me to stay
A place to be with "brothers"
To brighten up each day

Companionship - no better
The best guys one could find
To advise - befriend - encourage
You seldom meet that kind

We had time to socialize
Great parties - some "a blast"
Times that I remember
Much cherished from my past

I made lasting friendships
Friends until this day
Some still stay in touch
True "brothers" all the way

My life was blessed - enriched
And now you know the why
My world was born anew
When I pledged Delta Chi

South Dakota State Chapter's Sir Edward Coke Leadership Society: Every fall our chapter hosts a presidents' dinner, co-hosted by the president of South Dakota State University and the president of Delta Chi. Every year it grows larger and this year we had a great turnout. Guests included active and former presidents of SDSU, Deans of all the colleges, legislators, mayors of SD cities, titans of business, financiers, entrepreneurs, etc. We also hosted Sherwood Berg, president emeritus of SDSU, as a guest speaker once again at our bi-monthly meetings. He has an amazing story to tell. He was one of the first me across the Remagen Bridge into Germany during WWII, he fought communism as an agriculturalist in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, and served as the Dean of Agriculture at MN University, finally becoming president of SDSU. Next fall we are slated to travel to Omaha to meet with Warren Buffet.
Good news, my comic book "CruZader: Secret Agent of the Vatican" was chosen as the winner of the CW TV Network's first annual Comic Book Hero contest. There are TV commercials running together with the TV Show Smallville (about Superman as a teenager) and you can see the announcement and TV spots at this Web site:

http://cwbayarea.com/cbh_winner/kbcw.ugc.comic.2.857377.html

A handful of media outlets have picked up the story and I'm happy to also provide you with copy, actualities or high resolution art. Hopefully the publicity boost will catch the eye of a publisher. Thanks again for your support.

Duquesne Chapter member Adam Gianella has had a book published entitled, "One Shot for Redemption." Here is a little description...

"Imagine having all the fame of being the highest rated high school football player in the country. Imagine having a future full of possibilities and a girlfriend of completely loyalty... Now, imagine all of this slipping away...

This scenario is of 16-year-old high school football player Billy Newman of Old Woodville High School. When Billy's father dies of a sudden and tragic heart-attack, a mysterious man, named Brock, who claims to be a former friend of Billy's father comes to "watch-over" Billy's progress. At first, Billy is able to perform well, but after a terrifying injury at the hands of a wreckless opposing player, Billy starts to question Brock's true intentions as to why he has come to Woodville. Why has Brock come? Will Billy come to trust Brock and utelize Brock's plan of success to help him recover from his injury in enough time to save Old Woodville's season? The time-table for potential redemption or complete failure has just begun..."

From Brother Matt Gurwitz, Abracadabra '08:

I am serving as a Jewish Service Corps volunteer for the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), a special project of some very dedicated people and the non-sectarian arm of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Genocide, War, AIDS, and life itself have left at least 20% of Rwanda's population orphaned. When the village opens in December, ASYV will become the new home for its first class of 125 orphans, restoring the rhythm of life and - with the resources of a healthy home and community - provide the space and freedom to discover, learn, create, and grow into poised leaders of the Rwanda of tomorrow. When it's complete, ASYV will serve 500 high-school aged orphans from every part of Rwanda.

Along the way, I hope I can share some of the stories of the people I meet and come to know. I hope you'll enjoy discovering this country alongside me.

You may follow along at: http://andrewgurwitz.com

Gannon Students Remove Graffiti

Armed with rags and paint remover, over 20 students from Delta Chi Fraternity at Gannon University set out Sunday morning to clean up graffiti splashed across the back of buildings along west 26th street and tagged garages hidden in alleyways.

Matthew Soffel, a brother of the Fraternity, said preserving the reputation of the city is why he and the rest of his fraternity were out trying to reserve the damage done by a handful of people.

Jessica Huran-Kunco works in conjunction with the graffiti task force... a force that has been working hard over the past year to erase the vandalism, but cleaning the tagged buildings is just a part of the puzzle at stopping graffiti. The Task force is working hard to find long range solutions to the problems by trying to put ordinances in place and apply for grants to put security cameras in place.

Until their is a long range solution, removing graffiti as quickly as possible is extremely important to send a clear message to the vandals, and the brothers of Delta Chi agree that graffiti is something their fraternity won't stand for. - Posted on 6:19 pm Sun October 26 2008 by Cheryl Scott of WSEE NEWSWATCH."

East Hartford, September 13, 2008 More than 100 members of the Connecticut Chapter of Delta Chi came together on 9/13/08, to celebrate nearly 60 years of intense pride, and to watch the Uconn football team thrash Virginia at Rentschler Field in East Hartford CT.

Groups lead by Mike Velgouse, '62, Jim Lodigiani '78, Kevin Coyne '84, Jon Russo '89, Joe E Cunningham 07 and current "A" Troy Lipp '09, along with wives, children and friends, tailgated and relived old times; but more importantly strengthened bonds across generations, and created new memories to relive another day.

Attendees ran the gambit from Rowland Ballek '55, a member of our first Delta Chi pledge class at Uconn, to newly minted Associate Members. Cameo appearances were made by Gus Kahramanidis '68, Tom Rock '80, Gordie Hurlbert '81, John Dineen '84 and Bobbie Gentes '08. Scores of other Delta Chis attended, creating a brilliant atmosphere at the corner of A lot, near gate C.

Special thanks to the DCPA football committee lead by John Tunila '81, and assisted by chef Cappy Amodio '79, Mike Victor '79, Phil Fokas '81, and Mark Aulletta '89. Photo credit and thanks to Melissa Plummer.

If you are proud of your Uconn Delta Chi experience, you should have been there. We will be there next year. See ya then.
